Bio
Katherine Blackburne is a London-born, Australian-raised, New York–based painter. She holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MFA from Columbia University, where she has also taught and held instructional and assistant roles.
Blackburne has exhibited widely, with solo shows in New York, Los Angeles, and Australia, and her work has been featured in major international art fairs including Art Basel Miami, SCOPE, and the Dublin Biennial. Her paintings are held in private collections across Europe, the United States, and Australia.
Her recent paintings place the figure within theatrical landscapes of inflatable animals, pool toys, and artificial leisure, where play and motherhood become charged with vulnerability, desire and threat. Through saturated color and cropped, psychologically tense compositions, Blackburne creates images in which beauty and unease coexist. Drawing on mythology, art history, landscape, and the symbolic charge of the figure, her work explores the unstable space between nature and culture, intimacy and theatricality, ritual and contemporary life.
